  Horrible of horribles. They did everything under the sun to block me from getting my homestead exemption. I had to produce all of my marriage certificates and all of my divorce certificates. Then they argued about name changes in the certificates, claiming that I could not prove I was the person who owned this property, even suggesting that the judge in one of my two divorces had ordered me to keep my maiden name, as if that were any of their business. After making at least two trips to produce these documents which I should have never been required to produce in the first place, they claimed I had never submitted some of them, even though I saw them run them through the copier-- and I had to start all over again. I finally had to call Judge Pierce, who was of no help at all. On the verge of filing a law suit, I got my daughter to lay down the law to them. The new rules to prove eligibility for a homestead exemption are on the web and do not require one to produce one's personal marriage and divorce documents. I soon found out why they were so adamant to keep me from securing rights to a homestead exemption. Apparently under current law, they owed me a $70.00 refund which I subsequently received in the mail. All that hassle was pure obstruction, They did not want to pay the refund. They saw this as an opportunity to kick single, vulnerable women off of their homestead exemptions, which they have had for many many years, just to put more tax dollars in their coffers. Also, it was an unnecessary invasion of my privacy. And I am not the only one who suffered such harrassment.; I also found out that the lady across the street was being given the same hassle. I don't know if she ever got her homestead exemption. No one should be treated in this manner. It's pure corruption. Furthermore, why should I have to go to the net to use a card to pay my taxes. Just more obstruction. They only accept cash at the office.
